3 2016 Winter Festivals
People gather together for many reasons. At this time of
year, following the winter darkness of the Northern Hemisphere, folk festivals
provide the perfect opportunity for people to gather together to share and
celebrate cultural folk arts, food ways and customs.
Here is a list of some of the North American festivals
offered January through March.
Quebec Winter Carnival
January 29-February 14, Quebec City, Canada
Snow sculptures, winter sports, and traditional Québec
activities like dogsled and canoe races are some of the highlights at this
event which is considered by many to be the largest winter carnival in the
world. It started in 1894 in what was the New France colony and was, like many
Mardi Gras festivities, meant to help people whoop it up before the coming of
Lent.
Oregon Shakespeare Festival
February 19-October 6
11 different plays each season include four by Shakespeare
and seven by other classic writers, as well as modern and contemporary work and
world premieres. Festival events also include back stage tours, readings,
lectures and more.

Frozen Dead Guys Days
March 11-13, Nederland, Colorado
This festival is wacky. Its origins begin with a local
legend about the dead body of Grandpa Bredo and has grown into three days of days
of Polar plunges, coffin races and more. Some report this event which also
features frozen fish tosses and more is about as opposite as you can get from
Dia De Los Muertos. But you’ll need to be the judge of that.
Calle Ocho
March 13, Miami, Florida
This street festival takes place in Miami’s Little Havana area
which is approximately 23 blocks of fun, including 30 stages of Latin music.
The festival concludes the 10-day Carnaval
Miami. This Kiwanis fundraiser celebrates Cubans in exile, but
it’s also home to Hondurans, Nicaraguans,
and other immigrants from Central America and the Caribbean. The neighborhood’s main street is SW
8th Street, or Calle Ocho in Spanish. It’s a one-way street packed with coffee
shops, cafes, bakeries, beauty salons, mercados and art
galleries.
